Hi Mike,

Thanks so much for your reply. Yea, when I saw the full install was 2.5 GB I decided on a custom. The documentation says to only install what you need anyway. And thanks for the heads-up about the listener.

I will try doing the install ahead of time with the database up and see what happens. Aw heck, what's the worst that can happen?

Have a great weekend and a relaxing holiday.

In a word, yes. We do it all the time on our varied platforms. We have WinNT, Win2K, Solaris, HP-UX, AIX, and Linux. As long as you follow your plan and install in a separate ORACLE_HOME, you should have no problems.

I do recommend doing a 'Custom' install though, and when the assistants start to run just cancel them out. Otherwise you might get listener conflicts.

HTH,
Mike

Hello all,

I'm working on an upgrade, my first major one on Windows (w2k)

The docs I've read aren't specific about when to actually install the software. So here's what I've done:

  1. Prepare the databases as directed in Note 159657.1
  2. Shut the db's down, install the software into a different oracle home
  3. Bring db's up and run the proper upgrade script (in this case, u0801070.sql)

And then follow the remainder of the directions in this note.

My question is, can I install the software ahead of time, with the databases up and available? Yes, I know, "try it out", I'll try it with the next upgrade test on the next host. But if someone has been there/done that, I would appreciate any pointers.

I'm a moron when it comes to windows. Or should I say I am a MONKEY when it comes to windows

Thanks everyone
