In addition to Dennis's note ... I am surprised no mention of Don Burleson yet ... he wrote a book on Statspack. He also has some really nice utilities that take advantage of statspack data.

I think that you have two issues:
1. STATSPACK itself, how to install it and the value of it. It sounds like you've mastered that aspect.
2. Understanding what STATSPACK is telling you. This isn't strictly a STATSPACK issue. You mention the wait events. I would phrase the questions: How can I come to understand the Oracle wait events and how to help them diagnose performance problems and tune my applications and database?

For the latter, probably the best introduction is the first couple of chapters of Oracle Performance Tuning 101 by Kirti Deshpande who contributes to this list. Another recently published book is Oracle Performance Tuning by Christopher Lawson.

There are plenty of Web sites with lots of useful free materials, try: www.hotsos.com
www.oraperf.com
I'm probably missing some important resources, so maybe someone else will post what I've missed.

Ive read the otn stuff and the niemic articles from Oracle mag.

anything else? any articles that give a brief intro that includes installation? Id prefer not to dig into the Burleson book. Im really looking for something brief.

Not too familiar with tuning wait events, but I 'think' we have some contention problems, and before I create an elaborate routine, Id like to get some metrics.

any quick start guide?
