Gene,

    I presume you are running on unix. I have encountered a similar situation several times. When the database is opened, several background processes, including CKPT, acquire locks on each datafile. Even though you moved/renamed the file, the file handle is kept by the background process. It now points to the new file, since you did not close the file. Try to query against data in the datafile and you will get an error, because the foreground process attempts to open the file, which it cannot find.
