Hi Alex! Missed you in Orlando...

I have had exactly this problem. ruinInstaller (pun intended) sometimes runs fine from the CD (or a copy from CD to disk), but hangs or - more often - simply disappears with no error messages. The Summary screen comes up, then you click on Install, then it goes for 10 seconds or so, then it simply disappears without a trace.

Apparently, RedHat has issued a number of different "versions" of the AS 2.1 install media. There is no way to tell them apart except by serial number and even that doesn't appear to be an obvious method. The software is identical on each, but what gets installed when various options are chosen varies significantly between these "versions". At least that is what I've been told.

We have two servers which were built with one "version" and another which was built from different media. OUI on the first two servers worked fine to install the software, but afterward, the installed runInstaller would not work. That was fixed by getting a newer version from Metalink (there is a separate download of OUI for Linux available).

On the third server, OUI won't run even from the CD - or with the updated OUI. I fought it for half a day about two weeks ago, then did an "rpm -q --all" on this server and on one of the other (successful) servers, then sorted and compared the output. There were significant differences in the installed packages between the two "versions" - even though the SA swore that the "installations were identical".

Apparently, the Oracle certified configuration, the installation guide, and other such collateral is based on installing AS 2.1 from the "gold" media - which we mere mortals don't have. The answer from Oracle support was to choose to "install everything", then selectively uncheck only a few items that you REALLY don't want. That isn't acceptable here, so we just reinstalled AS 2.1 from the same media that worked on the other servers.

The biggest problem with Oracle on Linux (especially AS 2.1) seems to be quirks with the java-based tools. They seem to require some tweaking/diddling/swearing most of the time. I have one Linux system where OUI runs OK now, but dbca consistently hangs at 41% complete. (Not a big problem though since I detest dbca anyway.)

A secret decoder ring should be included with the Linux Oracle CDs ;-)
