Best practice backup/recovery tape gurus

I am consider the pros and cons of tape backup using Veritas to Tape bot.

 Anybody have good reasons to having separate pools for your backups to

 ensure recovery without problems.

 I am seeing problems with other people using the tapes while you are trying to request a backup.

But con is all your backups are on single tape...that if goes bad wrecks serveral backups. You dont get the interleaving effect.

I am thinking the separate pool is better for consistent recovery...
