Hello,

As suggested by many of you guys here on the list, without arguing much with our Unix Admin. we thought we would do a test recovery. Our recovery tests failed totally. The next test we did was doing split by putting our database in hot back mode and then did recovery. The recovery was smooth and we could do roll forward without any problems.

So now our SA agrees with us. One thing I found while doing all these tests is EMC's consistent
split can be done on a running database without putting database into hot backup just to make a clone of your database. This database will come up without any problems and can be used a image copy of your original database. But remember, this database cannot be used for recovery and we cannot do rollforward to point in time with this.

Below whitepaper gives a very good understanding of EMC Timefinder.

Again thanks a lot for all your inputs,

Hello,

We are on IBM AIX 4.3.3 with EMC and BCVs. Our Unix admin has setup the backups for the database in following sequence to do the Hot backup.

  1. Put all tablespaces in the database in Hot backup mode
  2. Sleep 5
  3. Put all the tablespaces back into normal mode
  4. Split the BCV's
  5. Mount on another machine and backed up from it.

What I am concerned is with step 4. Split BCV's should be done at step 2 instead of step 4.
According to our Unix Admin, EMC takes care of consistency and there is no need for any concern. As per him the split is instant split and EMC guarantees consistency.

What do you all think. What is the recommended procedure.

TIA, Nate
