Naveen - Hmm . . . the character set thing certainly adds to the issues. Myself, I have never really dealt with character set issues. But having dealt with Oracle and its issues, I can provide my ideas. First I would research the export/import route and the other alternatives to see if one of them can perform the character conversion you need. As you say, you may have to drop the data to a flat file and create a program to do the changes. If that doesn't provide a satisfactory solution, you may want to test the migration tool. My gut feeling is that you will have challenges either way, but you may have to invest more time in the migration tool before you hit those issues, whereas the export/import is more like an afternoon adventure. And you may get lucky and someone on this list may have hit this exact issue. Ya here that? IF YOU'RE OUT THERE, WRITE IN! Dennis Williams

Thanks Dennis for a beautiful reply....

Anyways, since I have been pushed into unknown territory(Oracle 7) on which I
have never worked before, I can't go home and sleep that early :-)

The downtime will not be a problem.

I'm yet to see the database, but will be working on the migration pretty soon. But the thing which i'm worried about the most is not the migration from version 7 to 9i, its the corresponding character set conversion which will really test me, and also my lack of experience(maybe).

My concern is how to ensure the data correctness after the conversion. All I have been mailed to me is that :
<mailed to me>
There are few tables which store Chinese Characters. And it also requires converting Big5 internal code (some are HK characters set) into Unicode ISO10646:1-2000
</mailed to me>

Now even after searching on Google, I don't understand what "Big5 internal code (some are HK characters set)" means.

I understand that due to incompatibility of Character sets there maybe issues
like data truncation and data corruption, but is it true that if the conversion is to Unicode, this should not happen?

In case, it happens how to ensure that the data is complete and correct. I can inmport the data to flat files and write some code to compare the data, but are there any tools available.

I have enough documentation, but not enough experience so if you experienced people want to share anything which I may miss out, I'll appreciate it.

And ya, sorry for a long mail.

Regards,
Naveen
