Ethan - Technically it shouldn't be a problem. Which Unix? What is the
objective of 20 instances rather than one instance with 20 schemas? A single
instance allows Oracle to allocate resources more efficiently. For example,
the data buffer reflects the hottest blocks globally, rather than 20 small
data buffers with the hot blocks for each schema. Our test system runs many
instances. One thing I've noticed is that if an instance hasn't been used
for awhile, it takes a little while to get a response. My assumption is that
after awhile the O.S. pages out the little-used memory blocks in favor of
the ones being used more frequently.

I got a request to spec out a machine that could handle 20 separate Oracle instances on a single UNIX server. SGA should total about 500 MB per instance. We have some hosts here with 6-8 instances but never tried 20 before. Wondering what types of things I should be worried about, obviously having enough memory but are there any other limitations I can expect? Anyone had to do this?
