I used to believe that(and still do most of the time), here is the catch.

if you need to restore lets say all of the datafiles because you lost
all of the datafiles(but your control files and redo logs are intact),
you just need to make sure to restore ONLY the parts you need, thats the
simplest way to make sure you get a good setup for recovery. Restoring
all of the control files and/or all of the redo logs will messup the
chance to roll forward.
