Disks are getting faster and you can read a lot more data from one disk reather that getting your data from many disk locations. Also it doesn't really matter the size of the tables if you use the S.A.M.E theory. All disks are treated as one disk farm today. I haven't tried it but it sounded reasonable. Edwards OneWorld have over 200 columns, VARCHAR is not used, only NUMBER and CHAR. Makes for some wide tables. This product was originally some type of flat file database.
