Paul,

You mean user_tab_columns.avg_col_len instead of user_columns, right?

I'm glad to say that your typo made me look at this table again, and I found this usefull column! Wish I had seen it last week when I was calculating how much disk space I am going to need for a new DB. I had to come up with a kludgy way of calculating index size by "averaging" column widths. This column would have been much easier to use!
