Hi!

I am an Oracle products user (in fact JDBC applications that use Oracle as a backend) but I used them only under Windows platforms. The installation on that kind of platform is pretty simple, but I am not so satisfied with the performances. I have been told that Oracle products work with better results on UNIX platforms. I have an RedHet 7.0 server machine and I tried to install Oracle8.1.7 for Linux Enterprise Edition. I followed all the steps from the Installation Guide but the following errors occurred:

  1. not connected to Oracle (when the dbassist run)
  2. end of communication channel.

If I run a ./tnsping <my_sid> the response is ok, but if I try to

I dig deeper on some newsgroups and I found out that there are many users with this problem, so my questions are:

  1. what is the best open source implementation of linux to use with oracle?
  2. where can I find a specialized documentation on Oracle Installation (8.1.7) on RedHet 7.0? (a list of the steps that I must follow would be very helpful to me)
  3. can you give some links with advanced issues on the problems I told you about?

Best regards,
Cristi Marius
