This is a restriction to using dbms_output that maximum length is >255.

This is a restriction of the package DBMS_OUTPUT(). The restriction and resulting error messages are documented in the file dbmsotpt.sql. This file can be found in the directory $ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/admin on UNIX platforms.
