Ethan,
 I have 8.1.7 on AIX 4.3.3. Don't have 8.1.6.x anymore.  I have used exp/imp extensively with the 8.1.7.0 database with no problems.  However, we do have the APAR applied that Anita mentioned.

 You can check if the APAR is applied or not using the following command:  /usr/sbin/instfix -i | grep IY15138
