If you are interested in reusing as much of your existing business logic held in PL/SQL and getting that across to Java you might want to consider in2j, an automated tool for migrating PL/SQL into Java.

Our shop is new to Java and we are trying to decide the 'best' approach to transition to Java from PL/SQL. It is currently undecided whether or not we are going to a 100% java shop, but the possibility is there (Please don't ask why!). If this is done, it will be in phases. The modeling is being done in Rational Rose, but we are going to use JDeveloper for implementation. We were directed to implement a messaging 'subsystem' as the first phase. Messaging will be composed of sending out free form email (broadcasting) and sending automatic emails (triggered by pressing an 'update' button) via web pages (using JSPs).
Several people in the office are looking at different ways to implement this. Some of the suggestions are to use EJB or BC4J or Web beans(Is this comparing apples to oranges?). We are very new to Java and we are learning as we go. Is there an advantage of using EJBs over Web bean or BC4J and vise versa? (The EJB email example I have seems much more complex than the email web bean example. BC4Js are simple to design, but involve customization and are Oracle specific. (the shop is not sure if we want to stay Oracle specific)) Has anyone else had to deal with this dilemma? If so, what was decided?
We will also have to use Java Stored Proc to call some of the existing web pages. Are there any down sides to that? Is that 'normal' practice?
I also know that Oracle offers the UML_SMTP, but that is not a desired route for the office.
