Thanks for all the replies. I download a copy of DVD Decrypter from www.flexion.org. It works great to get a copy of the DVD on your hard drive. Trouble is, the files are all 6-8 gig. So they can't be put back on a
normal CD. Nice try anyway. Guess I'll just buy an extra copy next time.

The specs I gave are just that. Specifications from the DVD MPEG group. Most DVDs pressed today are dual-layered (due to all the extra content and features). You can usually see the layer switch, unless you have a second or third generation DVD player (they have large buffers for this). I can always tell where it is becuase my receiver drops the audio for a second and then re-acquires.

As for DVD-18 (18gb dual layered dual sided) discs, these are dual-layerd flipper discs. They are usually the ones with STANDARD pan and scan on one side and WIDESCREEN on the other, and multiple features on both. Some will even put Dolby digital on one side and DTS on the other. A good example of a DVD-18 disc is the early release copies of T2:Terminator 2. This disc has a ton of extra content, in addition to the extended movie, and was originally put on one disc (two sides dual layered). They used every inch of space for that one. However, the demand for sales was way beyond their expectations. And since, at the time, there was only 1 or two plants capable of pressing dual-layered dual-sided discs, they couldn't meet demand. So they shifted to a 2-disc set. That's what you'll find today. There is a judegment call to be made on cost of 2 discs, packaging and weight versus 1 flipper disc with not as many copies.

I haven't seen too many dual-sided dual-layered (DVD-18) discs out lately so I don't know where the trend is headed. I do see alot of flipper discs (standard / widescreen) but they are usually single-layered. I think they try to keep the discs as simple as possible (single-layered) when they can so all players can read them ok. There are quite a few (Abyss, Matrix among others) which can be troublsome in the earlier players (seamless branching and index features).

I could go on an on (I used to work for a company which did DVD), but this is an Oracle forum, right? By the way, we used Informix for our database needs. Hey, at least they beat our Sybase...

What dvd's are you using? They are generally 4.7Gb per side, and 9.4Gb if they are duel layered.

It would take approximately 6-10 CD-R to handle the average DVD in full quality. Although in poor quality they are generally only 1.2Gb from what I have seen.

DVD can hold 5.7Gb-9Gb.

Or you can convert them to VCD format and burn them to a regular CD-R, although it will probably span more that one CD-R.

You may be able to copy them but all the copyright or copyleft guys will be at your doorstep by tomorrow. I have heard about and seen a 4 line perl implementation that decodes the VOBs to hard disk, but then you need large disk space as well.

A DVD RAM drive would help though ....
