Hi Rachel,
As mentioned, I had checked DBA_DATA_FILES and it wasn't there. Hadn't thought to use fuser, that also showed no one accessing it so I just issued the command with REUSE and it worked fine.

couple of things to check before you do anything with this file:
first, select from dba_data_files to see if Oracle thinks the file is in the
database.
second, at the OS level (this is Unix, yes?) go to that directory and do an
fuser on that file. If no processes show up, the file is not being accessed.
I *think* that Oracle creates the physical file before attempting to add it to the database and that's why you see the file there. If you can determine
that it's not being used, you can just add it with the reuse clause.
