killing a thread

Is there a way to kill (other than kill session) a thread that is doing an insert - nologging?

I have tried "alter system kill session" to no avail. It gives me the message
"marked for kill" but the process continues to hang.

The process has a row exclusive lock with a lock type of TM(dml). There are no rows in the table that is being inserted into.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Eric
