Also, I wouldn't recommend trying the upgrade with Oracle installed. We tried it at the office once just for the sake of trying it and it was a bigger pain the then anything else. However, think of it this way, you could try it and if it doesn't work, you have nothing to lose anyway. good luck Kev -----Original Message----- From: root@fatcity.com [mailto:root@fatcity.com]On Behalf Of elkinsl@flash.net Sent: Friday, January 12, 2001 4:12 PM To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Subject: 8.1.6 EE on NT 4 Sp5 Upgrade to Win2k Listers, I am considering upgrading my home machine from NT 4.0 SP5 to Win2k. I have 8.1.6 EE installed as well as tons of other Oracle prodcts and lots of other non-Oracle software. The hardare configuration has been certfied by Dell, and, they sent me the upgrade disk some time ago. Has anyone done this upgrade with 8.1.6 installed? Success? Dismal failure? Totally wiping the machine clean, doing a fresh install of Win2k, and reinstalling everything might be preferable; but, it would also be *extremely* time consuming. I've searched Metalink and Technet and didn't really turn up anything other than a couple of Forum conversations where it looked they did an upgrade similar to what I am considering. Minor problems, easily fixed, were encountered. I've already talked to a couple of listers back channel (thanks folks); but, before I attempt the upgrade, I wanted to get the thoughts of other listers as well who may have tried this. Another option is has anyone purchased or come across stable USB drivers for NT 4.0. NT itself doesn't support USB, and MS doesn't intend to provide support, while Win2K supports USB. And that is the main reason I am looking to upgrade -- I need to use the USB port. If someone knows of good 3rd party generic USB drivers, I might consider that route instead of upgrading to Win2k.
