I don't know if someone answer you. However I can tell you my experience about it. I used it in Solaris 2.5.1/RDBMS 7.3.X and I had really good results. I didn't feel any boosting in the performance of DBWR/LGWR using it in Solaris 2.6 with 7.3.X and 8.X. Then I did some benchmarks in HP-UX 11.X and in AIX 4.3.X with 7.3.X and 8.X and again I didn't feel any gain. And certainly it got worse than using several db_writters when the machine has the properties to take advantage of this feature. When I say properties of the machine, I mean several CPUs and information distributed on several controllers and disks. The platforms I used, are E 10000, E 6500, E 450 from Sun, V2500 and K250 from HP-UX, and H-70 and J-70 from IBM.

Whatever the results you get, when you test it, remember to ask Support or access Metalink because there are several bugs related with this feature. And also every port has different ways to set it. In HP-UX you need to make the device and apply some OS patch. In AIX you need to set a correct number of minservers and maxservers of the kernel. At least a doble number of it. For these ones you have to reboot the machine.

I got some performance gaining, when I used raw-device redo logs in a heavy batch application.
