What happened when you tried to restart Oracle. If the restart failed, did =
you try a "SHUTDOWN ABORT", "STARTUP" sequence?

My first thought is that someone physically deleted the database files. =
This
would cause an error in the running processes. Not sure what the error =
340 is.
Did the database files actually disappear? If so, check the history file =
(if
unix) of the Oracle user. This will show you commands issued by the =
Oracle user
- who should be the only user able to do this type of thing with the =
exception
of root!? I have never heard of an Oracle instance "disappearing" in my =
16
years of working with Oracle. Unless this is a very strange situation, =
you may
have some sabatoge or very inexperienced person that caused this.
Interesting. Let us know what actually happened here.

Hi,
I got up this morning only to find out that one of our 8.1.5 instances had mysteriously "gone away". Only trace of why the instance died are these 3 lines in the alert log in bdump.
Anybody got ideas what went wrong? Thanks.
