Julie-
Just curious, why not go to 8.1.6 since 8.1.5 death spiral has been = announced already? 8.1.5 has its share of bugs, reviews on 8.1.6 are = fairly sparse but so far not bad.

We are going from Oracle 7.3.4 to Oracle 8.1.5 mainly because I don't want
the hassle in a year or two of having to upgrade the database from 8 to =
8i.
I will say in terms of the OS, go with Solaris. I've installed both =
Solaris
and HP-UX, and I like Solaris much better. I really can't say that =
Solaris
is faster or more robust than HP-UX, but it sure is easier for me to work
with. That may be because I'm more used to Solaris, though.

My company and me are about to decide to go either for Oracle8 or Oracle8i =
.
It's an absolutely new Internet application , so no migration is needed - =
we
are starting from scratch .
I'm interested in all the inputs , especially in terms of performance ,
stability & easiness of maintenance , to compare the two versions .
We are planning for thousands of concurrent users & a very high
queries/second rate , although the queries promise to be pretty light
selects .
The O/S be Sun UNIX (or may be HP-UX , we haven't decide about this
either :-) .
Any input will be VERY appreciated .
Thanks a lot in advance .
