I installed Oracle database 10G, Oracle forms and reports, no problem.
I installed Webutil following Oracle instructions and when I try to run Webutil_demo, all I get is a blank screen with a message at the bottom:
"Waiting for http://virtualxp-28481:8889/Forms/frmservlet..."

At the top it shows"
"http:\\virtualxp-28481:8889/forms/frmservlet" with a spinning circle
It runs like this until I stop the process.

If I go back and try to run a form that was working with out Webutil, all I get is a message at the top showing Connecting..., with the spinning circle.
This also runs until stop the process.

installing obsoleted database & application server software on obsoleted OS.
It appears you want to avoid the 21st Century.
Good Luck with your efforts.

Open the Java Console and look for any Java Exceptions. WebUtil is dependent on the JACOB.jar for many of the client methods so you could be getting a Java related error. Also, which version of the JACOB.jar did you download and configure?

Which instructions did you use? If you opened the Oracle Forms help system and use the "Configuring WebUtil" and "Runtime Setup Checklist" Help Topics?

I did not see any exceptions in the Java Console.

The Jacob.jar downloaded was Jacob_18 version 1.14.3

I followed Configuring WebUtil and Runtime setup checklist from Oracle.

Can you run the standard TEST.fmb/fmx to confirm you can run a form? This could be a generic Runtime issue and not a WebUtil issue.

I tried Test.fmb with the same results.
I even took out the ?config=webutil in the app server url with the same results.

I also get a message at the top:
This tab has been recovered
A problem with this webpage caused the Internet Explorer to close and reopen the tab.

I do not get this message with the Webutil_demo program...

So your problem is not with WebUtil specifically, you can't run a form at all.

Based on this statement, I'm going to guess you have installed your Oracle products into a Windows XP Virtual Machine.

What is your computer OS and why did you install in a Window XP VM?

I am using Windows 7 Professional with Microsoft Virtual PC.

I had the Oracle software for a 32 bit system.

Does this mean your Windows 7 Pro is 64-bit? How much RAM Memory do you have installed and how much did you allocate to your MS Virtual PC instance? If you only allocated 1gb of Ram to your Virtual PC instance, you won't have enough. You need at least 2gb, if not greater - depending on the amount of RAM install, of course.

BTW, you can install the 32-bit version of the Oracle Developer Suite (ODS) 10g R2 on Windows 7 64-bit. I ran it for a couple of years before upgrading to Oracle Fusion Middleware (FMw) 11g R2. There are specific steps to installing in order for it to work correctly. Specifically,
1. The Oracle installer does not recognize "System Managed" virtual memory so you must temporarily alter Windows and set a specific Min and Max Virtual Memory settings. Typically a Min of 1024mb and Max of 3096mb should be sufficient for the installation. After the installation is complete, change your VM settings back to System Managed.
2. The Oracle Installer checks for specific versions of the Windows OS. Since Windows 7 is version 6.0, the install will fail. You must run the installer in "Compatibility Mode" for Windows XP Service Pack 3. This instructs Windows to tell the installer that the Windows version is 5.3 instead of 6.0. To set the compatibility mode - right-click on the Installer and select Properties. The click the Compatibility Tab and check the Compatibility Mode checkbox and select Windows XP sp3. Don't close the properties yet...
3. The Oracle installer must be installed with an account that has Administrator privileges. Because of the Windows User Account Control (UAC) all application execute as Standard User. Therefore, you must right-click on the installer and select the Compatibility tab and check the "Run as Administrator" checkbox.

Now you can close the properties and run the Installer.

Yes, my Windows 7 pro is 64 bit.

Should I download 11G R2 and install it without the Virtual Machine instead of trying to install 10G on Windows 7 and avoid some of the installation issues?

Is webutil setup about the same in 11g as 10g?

Thanks...

That's up to you. Forms 11g is a larger installation and it requires the installation of the WebLogic Server (WLS) 10.3.6. Given the fact that Oracle has stopped support for Forms 10g, you might want to consider using Forms 11g. If you decide to just use Forms 10g, I can tell you from personal experience that it runs just fine on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit because I developed with it for several years before having to upgrade to Forms 11g. Just follow the steps I listed to install. The two things I did not mention is that you will need to install the 32-bit version of the Java Runtime and use a 32-bit browser since Forms 10g is a 32-bit application.

The 11g configuration is a little bit different because 32 and 64 are supported. If you follow the Configuration Guide and Runtime Setup articles from the Forms Help, you will be fine.
