Explain EXACTLY what you mean.
What do you mean by "obsolete backup"?
Give us details of what you have?
Give us details of what you lost.

Michel

This still doesn't explain what do you mean by "obsolete backup".
This does not tell what you have and what you lost.

Your Backups would include the Controlfile as of the time of the Backup. So, if you restore that controlfile backup, the backups are "not obsolete" w.r.t the controlfile.

>So, if you restore that controlfile backup, the backups are "not obsolete" w.r.t the controlfile

Is 'So, if you restore that controlfile backup, the backups are "not obsolete" with respect to the controlfile'.

The controlfile backup that was included in the backup (or even any controlfile backup in the next 'n' days where 'n' is less than the OBSOLESCENCE policy) would not have marked the backup as Obsolete.

If I take a database backup on 01-Oct and my Retention is for 8 days, any controlfile backup from 01-Oct to 08-Oct would not have that database backup obsolete (assuming I do daily Full Backups).
Therefore, if I restore such a controlfile, I can use the same to restore the database as the database backup of 01-Oct is not obsolete with respect to the controlfile (that has been restored).
