Hi
I have just moved to a company that uses Oracle, in the past I have used SAP which had the function to be able to clear aged items so that when you ran a report you would just see the items that were open rather than seeing all items that have been posted to a specific balance sheet account, does anyone know if Oracle has a similar functionality?

Oracle is a database, it shows you the data at they are at the time you ask it.

Which Oracle Applications Release you are using now? 11i or R12?
I suggest you to go through the General Ledger User Guide wrt to your release version.

May be Account Analysis Report / Journal Entries Report will help you.
If it is related to specific subledger, Payables, then use Trial Balance Report (11i) / Open Account Balances Listing (R12).
