I have this 'funny' problem with the UTL_FILE package.
At times it works but at other times when I run my PL/SQL script that uses maybe the function UTL_FILE.FOPEN it fails. What could be the cause of this and how can it be solved.

I am getting this error message at the moment just before the line with UTL_FILE.FOPEN is executed.
The error message is :USER DEFINED EXCEPTION MESSAGE NO. 1

Check the init.ora file for the presence of utl_file_dir = *
