I seem to remember that the first edition had more or less the same chapter four. Anyway, the authors have kindly made it publicly available at http://www.dcs.warwick.ac.uk/~hugh/TTM/APPXA.pdf

Years ago, I remember the more earnest of IBM 360/370 assembler programmers would boast that they made it a practice to re-read "Principle of Operations" (known familiarly as "POO"). Hundreds of pages even then. Today, I regard the above appendix as a kind of minimal equivalent, but I hope it doesn't ever get compared to poo!

Much in TTM is over my head but that doesn't mean I don't recommend it to people who are more ambitious than I. Also free is the authors' chapter five, from which a careful reader may divine many of their secondary motives. These two guys think and write more carefully than pretty much any of the other commercial authors, in fact I'd say that's also true when they are compared to the majority of academics.
