In fact, if I understand correctly, the construct of fixed-sized integers is a fine example of a commutative ring. Not an abstraction or approximation of a ring, but an actual ring.

Well, I regularly hear of floating point being used in various simulations and other hard-science applications, but I lack any direct knowledge of this.
