Well, Roy, all you had to do was ask. No need to go reading web junk. Here, allow me to give a "Phd guy" explanation of data mining in a single sentence.

Data mining is a standard procedure by which those with PhDs find data and claim ownership of it by uttering the simple phrase "This data is mine" hence data "mine-ing" or "min'ing" or more commonly "mining".

All your DATA are belong to MINE! Hahaha ...
