The validity is indeed independent, however, the possibility that it will reach someone is greatly reduced as insults are distractions. What do you think would happen if I called you various insulting names and then at the end of my post make one valid point? What are the chances of this point reaching you or anyone else? What are the chances in anyone taking this point seriously if I established myself as an "insulter"?

IMHO insults are nothing but a noise contributing nothing to the discussion focus (unless insulting is the discussion focus).
