If we're going to use the "weapons" metaphor, here's a line from "Casualties of War" that echoes in my head whenever I see this issue come up in a news group:

Yeah, you got a weapon. Clark got a weapon... We all got weapons! Anybody can blow anybody away, any second. Which is the way it ought to be. Always."

Replace "weapon" with "news reader" and "blow away" with "flame," but the conclusion is still valid: this _is_ the way it ought to be. (IMO, of course.)
