Indeed, virtually all the temporal database research is based on discrete models.

In fact, there are quantum theory models which propose that time (like distance) is discrete. The the smallest possible measurement of time is known as Planck time, roughly: 5.391 10-44 sg.

But in most practical situations, miliseconds are more than enough.
