Materialized attributes

Has anything been written about or are there any SQL-DBMS or other DBMS tools that address data modeling with materialized virtual attributes (not materialized views)? I've found some materials that relate to performance and optimization of various materialized derived data, but it seems to all be related to entire views of derived data, rather than individual attributes. I'm interested in data modeling (design) that associates derived data with a base table, for example.

This might be mentioned in BI information related to cubes since such data would only be written by the dbms (or perhaps coded using triggers) and would otherwise be read-only and because cube products often permit the specification of stored aggregate data. I'm not interested in anything related to a separate BI system (data mart, warehouse), however.
