Thanks a lot Dawn, your reply has somewhat clarified my view on the matter and has given me some other tracks for research.

I've been to the websites of major database vendors and they all offer APIs or drivers that enable the database-application interaction, whether the application is in Java or .NET or another language.

I'll continue to investigate into the technologies you've mentionned like odbc, ole. Thanks again.
