To achieve (or at least inch closer to) the flexibility demonstrated by the human mind. One such aspect of humans is to handle new/unknown situations based on prior knowledge (data & programs?). The problem/solution I posted is a verify simple form of this aspect. If someone else can post a getRoot function for things in hierarchies for data know at design/implementation time and also for data/situations unknown/unanticipated ahead of time, comparing it with mine would allow me to know if I am on the right track.
