... Abiteboul, Vianu, Libkin and countless outhers. Perhaps they never got their hands dirty in the field? Say writing a client which is supposed to query payroll data from enterprise system. Naturally, enterprise systems these days don't provide you connection which you just could run SQL query over. Their "progressive" design pushes XML formatted data to the client. I don't think anybody who dealt with XML based solutions for enterprise application integration would develop anything different from Pascal-like attitude towards XML.
