I have a differnt explanation. Software industry today is very forgiving. You can design/implent all kind of b*it you want, and still have a paycheck. The list is pretty long: Corba, Application Integration, XML, OR mappers, bloated up middleware, etc. Somehow even the crappiest products manage to survive in a certain niches.
