Declarative XML Processing with XQuery (the future of SQL/XML integration?)

A future version of the SQL standard is expected to support the integration of XQuery in SQL statements, and vice-versa. The W3C announced XQuery has reached Candidate Recommendation status (after five years).

Dr. Daniela Florescu of the W3C XML Query Working Group suggests a direction the industry should be taking with XML and XQuery processing:

Dana describes XML as more than a technology for documentation and data interchange. She suggests we haven't exploited XML to its fullest potential.
