I'm not an expert in this area, but have one little tidbit to offer as this is also an area of interest to me.
I have been looking at updatable views as data models backing "screens" (forms, user interfaces). [And don't worry -- there is no need to inform me of model-view-controller and other patterns for decoupling a screen model from a database model] If we require such views to be relational views as currently defined, we cannot back most screens with a single updatable view. If you expand your definition of a view to permit nested structures or complex data types including multivalued attributes, then you can model a screen just as you might model the data for persistence in a non-1NF database.
