Since you are interested in a solution for a specific rdbms vendor product why not post to the newsgroup for mySQL?

With any other database: Oracle, DB2 UDB, or SQL Server I would probably lean to performing the shopping cart management tasks via stored procedures. Depending on your time frame and the expected release date of the version of mySQL that provides this feature you probably need to perform all the logic within your application.
