No one I am aware of has made a decision to favor Linux over Windows due to portability. Total cost of ownership? Absolutely. Some level of insullation from every 16 year old on the planet that can write some malicious code? You betcha. Some protection from spyware and other malevalent code? Unhuh. But portability? What am I going to do with an application built on Linux? Port it to AIX? Solaris? HP/UX? VMS? Hardly. If I care about portability I am writing Java and buying my database from a company that supports every major operating system and platform.
But portability isn't killing Windows: It is corporate greed. Microsoft's willingness to put its own profitability ahead of a conscientious effort to make a good product. I have close friends that work there. Their loyalty extends as far as their next paycheck. Their respect for what they are doing not even that far.
