note that the mainframe DB2 was relatively straight descendent from system/r. another RDBMS was written from scratch in the late 80s ... originally for OS2 and AIX ... but targeted at open platform and also called DB2. While they are totally differen implementations, they have attempted to maintain some degree of compatibility
