No. HTML is an SGML application, XML is an extended subset of SGML, and XHTML is an XML application; XHTML 1 is HTML 4 redefined in XML.

HTML and XHTML are markup languages. SGML and XML are languages for defining markup languages -- they're one level up, abstraction-wise.
