There are real good reasons for the choice of binary, both from a mathematical and an electrical engineering point of view.

There were some early computers that messed around with decimal, or even biquinary, but gradually the design gravitated towards binary. By the time computers switch from vacuum tubes to transistors, alternatives to binary were jsut about gone.
