For Oracle the concepts guide give a good start.

For 8i it is at

For 10i it is at
http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14117_01/server.101/b10743/toc.htm There are guides for the other versions too, but reading just these two would give you an impression of developments.

Lurking mailinglists for PostgreSQL could also help.
