More likely, the knowledge it wasn't possible with their tools, and the belief it wasn't practical in any other way, has lowered the expectations level.
Kinda like people who never used well-managed mainframes, VMS or Unices. They tend to think MS crashes, virii and insecurity are inherent to computing.
