When DEC entered the "relational derby" in the early 1980's, SQL was not yet the "de facto standard". DEC invented their own language, which they called "RDO". (The same acronym has since been reused several times, for completely different things. ) In about 1986, DEC added an SQL interface to their Rdb. Eventually, SQL became the "standard" interface.

The databases were in 1NF (or better). This has little to do with SQL. I'll remind you that Codd proposed 1NF, and did NOT propose SQL. AFAIK, Codd has always been critical of SQL. Received on Fri May 14 2004 - 18:14:09 CEST
