TCO is only relevant as a comparison parameter if the different products serve a purpose in the same realm (niche?). What would be a typical PICK-based environment? You mentioned PICK-a-likes being embedded in products for vertical markets and the no-need for DBA specialists, but I wonder about things like # of users, developers, development method, modelcomplexity and data sharing between different applications.
