Only if you care about things like correctness. Most people don't; most people only care about performance. If you get the right answer most of the time, they're happy.
The general thinking seems to be that coming up with the wrong answer really quickly is much better than coming up with the right answer a bit more slowly.
Most data models today are built on "The C Programming Language" by Kernigan and Ritchie.
