Give me a reference to this standard. I always thought I was pretty good about pruning things down to a human sized email and putting my replies with the appropriate text.

I hate those "millions of lines of redundant text with >>>>>>>> in front of them" things that lazy people post. They are a pain to read, a pain to edit for storage, introduce errors in code and the redundancyn adds nothing to the e message -- they are denomalized!
